“We Are People Who Know People” – Learning from Micah and Making Connections Within the Disability Community

Written By May Tulin

I arrived late to American Sign Language class last night and fumblingly signed, “Work was great today.” Work was great because I got to talk with activist Micah Fialka-Feldman. Since elementary school, Micah has fought against segregated education and limited social opportunities for people with disabilities like himself. He is best known for successfully filing suit for discrimination against Oakland University when enrolled as a student in the University’s OPTIONS program. Micah offers workshops across the country on self-advocacy.

Last night, two of our summer interns, Kelsey McFarland, Christina Vanciu, and I clustered around the computer to Skype with Micah. He appeared on the computer screen with a thick brown beard and an affable, awkward laugh. “So how’d you find your internships?” he asked. Micah was just returning  from his own internship at the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion. There, he runs workshops about ableism, sexism, and homophobia.

From our conversation, it was easy to understand his successful self-advocacy: he is at once disarmingly friendly and sharp. He follows one easy question, “So how’d you find your internships?” with a charming chuckle. He follows that with a more pointed question about one of our partnering agencies, “Is it segregated?”

Organizations like our own can learn a great deal from self-advocates like Micah. Last night, we hoped to learn from Micah about his speech-writing and delivery techniques. Micah told us that because he doesn’t read, he uses Powerpoints with images as prompts for delivering his speeches. Kelsey responded, “Making Powerpoints with our Buddy Ambassadors shouldn’t be hard.”

I heard in Kelsey’s statement a million connections. She echoed what activists have to say about curb-cuts or inclusive classrooms. Inclusivity and accessibility aren’t that hard – it’s just that non-disabled people aren’t used to hearing the voices of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

To hear Kelsey say this made me think about the impact of spreading Micah’s word. The network that we have with Best Buddies California is huge. We have the potential to connect hundreds of families from our school-based programming to the vibrant disability community of the Bay Area. For example, Micah’s family introduced me to the Silicon Valley Independent Living Center and to the local Berkeley blogger Stacey Milbern. These are connections to a world of possibilities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, connections that I want to share.

What makes Best Buddies unique from other disability-related non-profits is that we are experts at making connections. We can connect students with and without disabilities, special education teachers who wish to collaborate, celebrities and Buddies in our famous Bike Ride, and Micah with an intern. Simply put, we are people who know people. We have so much potential to keep making these connections - this is why I go to work in the morning.

“Emmy’s Pledge” Hannah Asks her Peers to Stop Using the R-Word

Story as told by Hannah:

I completed my senior year this year at Rancho Buena Vista high school, in Vista, California. Traditionally seniors are required to complete community participation hours and most students choose to attend school board meetings or events in the community. I chose to create my own project entitled “Emmy’s Pledge”. My little sister’s name is Emmy and she is 9 years old.

Hannah & Emmy

Emmy was born with a seizure disorder and has had three major brain surgeries, leaving her with special needs. My project was created in an effort to influence my peers to stop using the R-word, so I created a pledge that stated, “I pledge and support the elimination of the derogatory use of the R-word and promote acceptance and inclusion of individuals with intellectual disabilities.” . I spoke in numerous history classes and told Emmy’s story. Students were invited to sign the pledge and buy a purple bracelet that said “Emmy’s Pledge” on it to serve as a reminder NOT to use the R-Word. All of the proceeds paid for four of the special-needs students at my school to go to Prom. One of the four students named Randy, was voted Prom King by our student body.

What I learned the most during this process is the immense impact one individual can have if they set their mind to do something. I am so grateful that I had this opportunity because it allowed me to bring light to an issue that has been overlooked for so long. People are beginning to see those with special needs, not for their disabilities alone. I truly hope discrimination against people who cannot defend themselves is one step closer to being diminished.

Buddy Ambassador John Coulter Awarded Client of the Month at the Arc for his Public Work in Best Buddies

Buddy Ambassador John Coulter has been recognized by the Arc of San Francisco for his work in Best Buddies California. Through the Buddy Ambassadors program, John advocates for social inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. John completed his Buddy Ambassador training in March. He has since spoken at the Best Buddies California 5k Friendship Walk/Run, and at University of San Francisco Best Buddies chapter meetings.

John C. Speaking to the Bay Area Walk Participants

John brings a dynamic energy and natural charisma to his public speaking. Before the crowd of Friendship Walk participants at Crissy Field this spring, he stared intensely and pointed his finger, saying, “I’m looking at you, and I see Giants fans!” John knows how to connect with his audience, provoke, and excite.

John’s social prowess is a boon to his Best Buddies chapter at the University of San Francisco. John organizes group activities and one-to-one friendships between USF students and clients of the Arc. John brings his extroversion to bear in recruiting new members to the chapter, motivating chapter members, and making everyone feel welcome during events.

John has been a member of the USF Buddies chapter for several years. In the last year, he has enjoyed a deep and lasting friendship with USF senior Kelsey Jones. The two enjoy talking on the phone, eating out, volunteering, and going to sporting events. They also participate in USF chapter events together. John’s favorite events always involve the cheerleaders of the USF spirit squad.

USF Best Buddies was founded in 1989 and worked with two local high schools until 2007, when it established a lasting relationship with the Arc of San Francisco. The Arc of San Francisco is a non-profit service and advocacy organization for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families living in San Francisco and San Mateo counties.

The Client Advisory Committee of the Arc of San Francisco voted John Client of the Month in July. The Client Advisory Committee (CAC) is a group of self-advocates at the Arc. Best Buddies staff and chapter members are overjoyed that John’s work has garnered such public recognition.

Best Buddies California Student with Disabilities Selected for BP's Summer Youth Program!

Best Buddies California is excited to announce that British Petroleum (BP) has selected a young woman with disabilities to participate in their prestigious BP Summer Youth Program. In 2011 BP interviewed over 100 students to take part in their 6 week paid internship program. Only 20 students were selected to participate, and Jessica C. was thrilled to make the cut!

On Saturday June 18th all of the interns met for the very first time to go through a special orientation process where they were fitted with protective gloves, eye wear, reinforced boots, and blue coveralls. After the fitting, employment paperwork was signed and everyone had their picture taken for a special BP identification badge.

After celebrating July 4th with family and friends, all of the interns reported for BP safety training on July 5th. If you think that these interns start work at 9:00am, think again. Every morning starts at 7:00am and being late is not tolerated. Last week was spent learning everything there is to know about safety policies and procedures at the refinery. A test was issued to every intern, and Jessica passed with an 80%!

All interns are required to wear their Blue Jumpsuit Every Day

Best Buddies California will continue to follow Jessica as she is assigned to her official Supervisor and summer duties at BP. Stay tuned for more posts!

Best Buddies California Participant has a Celebrity Photo Shoot with Guy Fieri

Best Buddies California’s very own Michael Wireman had a very special opportunity to meet and participate in a photo shoot with celebrity chef, Guy Fieri.  Guy, who is most widely known for his hit Food Network TV show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, was in San Francisco this week to shoot promotional photographs for his new line of Guy Fieri’s Barbecue Sauce. Being a long time friend of Best Buddies, he kindly invited a Buddy to participate in a very exclusive photo shoot just for our organization.

Michael Wireman and Guy Fieri

Michael Wireman, a 16-year-old student and member of the Vacaville High School Best Buddies chapter was chosen as the lucky Buddy!  Michael participated in the Buddy Ambassador Program last March where he stood out as an exceptional personality while on stage delivering his speech.  Everyone knew he would shine just as bright in front of the camera next to a celebrity.

Just as expected, Michael and Guy hit it off right away, goofing off on the photo shoot set.  Guy gave Michael one of his signature, flashy chef’s coats to wear and they hung out like a couple of California dudes, equipped with sunglasses and listening to classic rock music.

After the shoot, Michael sampled some of Guy’s delicious and spicy barbecue sauces on top of a heaping portion of ribs.  He was sent home with an autographed case of the new bottled barbecue line and an invitation to cook with Guy in one of his restaurants in Santa Rosa, California this summer.
